Description
Inventory #16I3233EEE. Winters in the Sonoran Desert are usually mild, with a few days of inclement weather. The winter of 2023 was unusually cold, unusually wet, and unusually long. Near the end of the "official" winter solstice, Arizona got hit with a severe winter storm that left snow, not only in the high country, but down in the deserts as well. It happened overnight, but by the time I could get out the next morning and had enough cloud lifting to allow some sunlight in, the snow on the desert floor had turned to water that was running off rapidly. The mountains around the Valley, however, retained their snow pack for a couple of days, which is very rare. Usually when the mountains get snow, it has melted off by noon.
This image was captured in the Superstition Wilderness east of Mesa, Arizona off highway 60.
