Somewhere in Montana a hidden waterfall remembers a young Blackfeet girl.
Running Eagle was born Otaki, the oldest child in a Piegan Blackfeet family. As she grew, she became more interested in hunting than in cooking and sewing, and her father taught her to hunt and allowed her to go on a hunt. She saved her father's life when his horse was shot out from under him by their enemy. This act of heroism earned her the right to become a warrior, even though women were normally not allowed this honor. She was allowed to go on a vision quest, normally reserved only for men, and afterwards was given the name Pitamakan or Running Eagle. She continued to fight for her tribe but was finally killed in a raid.
This waterfall, also known as Trick Falls, is named for her. It was called Trick Falls by white men because it actually is two falls in one. The upper falls is from the actual stream that flows between the two lakes at Two Medicine. It falls about 40 feet. However, there is a sink hole back up the stream and most of the water falls through there, running below ground and finally gushing out in the lower portion of the falls. The site of the falls is the site of Running Eagle's vision quest.
This image was captured during a year of heavy rain, so the amount of water from the upper falls was greater than normal.
