Description
Inventory #V2A0840. This beautiful old house was found by driving down Road X in the Arikaree Breaks in northwestern Kansas. The Breaks are a sudden system of canyons that break the flatness of the Great Plain. Back in the early 1800's people came here, building houses and barns and setting up new lives in the middle of this inhospitable land. Their courage and fortitude are reflected in the homes they built. They were completely self-sufficient, as their nearest neighbor might be miles away and totally out of sight. Some of the houses are set high on the hills, braced to withstand the prairie winds. Others are set down in the depths of the canyons, hoping for protection from those winds. The people are gone now - moved to the towns and cities. But the homes they left behind still stand, symbols of the courage of a generation of people who left everything they knew behind to build new lives in a new land. This house, an apparently grand house, touched my heart and I wondered who had build such a magnificent home, living their lives and raising their children there. The wind whistles through the paneless windows, but the old house still stands courageously.
