Description
Inventory #V2A1831. This is the Illinois River, just above where it runs into the Mississippi. Rivers are such fascinating things. Some are so narrow they can be jumped and so shallow they don't even cover one's shoes. Others are grand and might and are highways for the people who live near them. The Illinois is one of the waterways that has been a great service to its country and its people. The Illinois is made by the joining of the Kankakee and DesPlaines Rivers and travels basically south 235 miles to the Mississippi. The last 20 miles, it is only 5 miles from the Mississippi, and the two rivers form a peninsula of land knows as Calhoun County of Illinois. The Illinois as part of the great transportation highway from the Great lakes to the Mississippi for early native peoples, trappers and settlers.
