Description
Inventory #V2A3359E. This is a view of the extinct volcano Cotachi on Lake Cuicocha. They are located near the city of Ibarra in the province of Imbabura in Ecuador. These are in the Andes Mountains. Laguna Cuicocha is actually a caldera of another volcano that erupted last about 1300 years ago. There is still some activity in Cuicocha that puts sulphur and heat into the water of the lake. Cotachi is over 16,000 feet high at its apex and is normally covered by clouds. We found it at a rare "destapada" moment as the clouds drifted by. "Cuicocha" is a Quichua word meaning "lake of the guinea pig." Although the waters support no life, there are guinea pig on the two islands in the lake. Cotachi is a Quichua word meaning powder salt.
